Wrestle-off matches will be made up of three one minute periods and will be held prior to each dual tournament. Coaches will set a deadline that all challenges must be made by, any wrestler making a challenge must be within 3 lbs. of the weight class they are challenging for by the time of wrestle offs. The dual team rosters can and will change during the season, as the weight classes from one tournament to another differ, and as the skill level of the wrestlers improve at varying rates. These dual teams are separate from the league team, a wrestler is not automatically considered for the dual team because he wrestles for the Stoughton Youth Wrestling program. This is a team that we will put together from the best kids from our school, regardless of what program they wrestle for, to compete against other school programs like ours. There may be times we will fill a weight class with a wrestler from another school but only if we do not have a wrestler from our school at that weight and it has been approved by the hosting schools Tournament Director. In the rare cases when a wrestler from another school district wrestles for the Stoughton Youth Wrestling program, that wrestler will have the same opportunity as a wrestler from our school.
We want this to be a team building experience for the kids as well as for the parents. If for any reason your child did not make the dual team rosters, please support them and encourage them to work hard and continuing to try. Wrestling is not only a very physical sport but a very mental and emotional sport as well. For these reasons we require that the wrestlers on the dual teams have at least 2 years of wrestling experience. The ONLY exception to this rule is if all coaches agree that a 1st year wrestler is mentally, physically and emotionally ready for this level of competition, the last thing we want to do is push a young wrestler away from this sport by putting to much pressure on them. Remember only the best wrestlers at each weight class will make the dual teams, this does not mean the ones that do not make the dual teams are bad wrestlers. When you look at the Junior High and Senior High teams Stoughton is fortunate to be three and four outstanding wrestlers deep at most weight classes, unfortunately only one wrestler can wrestle. In actuality the wrestlers who are not starters are the most important on the team because they are the ones pushing the starters at practice to be the best.
It is very important that you as well as your wrestler be aware of the weight class they are wrestling at and be able to maintain that weight to the ounce of a pound. We count on the parents help with this because you are financially involved as well as time. If your wrestler is just one ounce over the weight class at weigh-ins they will not be allowed to wrestle and as a team we will be forced to forfeit that weight class. Each forfeit is an automatic 6 points to the opposing team, which puts extra pressure on the rest of the team to make up those points. If you have any questions about this subject please see one of the coaches and we can help you understand and make suggestions on what to eat and drink and what NOT to. Good luck to all Stoughton Wrestlers!!!
Due to the competitiveness and amount of matches at these tournaments, sleep is very important. We ask that the night before a dual meet you have your wrestler in bed at an early time. At most dual meets there will be anywhere from 8 to 12 teams and in some cases more, this will mean your child could wrestle 4 to 6 times in one dual meet depending on how far the team advances.
Thank you for your time and if you have any questions regarding the Dual Team please feel free to contact email below.
